The Revelation Effects Revenant Preamp-Boost V1.2 is an always-on pedal designed to interact with your amp or IR to get the optimal amount of gain and harmonic content from your guitar or bass. When using it at high volumes it is ideal to push the front end of your amp all while EQ’ing to fit your particular instrument and/or sound style. When used at lower volumes, engaging the clipping option will add some compression and saturation without having to crank your amp. The boost also has two options, a full-frequency boost and a high-pass filter boost. The latter is great for guitarists who want to tighten things up by adding saturation and volume without getting muddy. The full frequency boost keeps all the EQ but gives you more. Because the boost comes before the preamp you will get some added saturation. Use the Revenant at the end of your dry signal chain to fine-tune the sound of your pedals. Once you’ve set your sound, you’ll often find that the dirt pedals used before it sound better than they did before. The Revenant Preamp-Boost: Bring your tone back from the dead.
The idea of the Revenant Preamp-Boost V1.2 began in a no-longer-produced preamp pedal by the bass company Fodera. The Fodera Model 2000 is a rare bass preamp pedal with a master volume and a 3-band eq where a mid-boost/cut can be engaged with a separate foot switch. While the Model 2000 is a great bass preamp, it sounds amazing on guitar. As an older pedal, it needed upgrades to suit current musicians’ needs and make it more suitable for guitar. We hired John from Electronic Audio Experiments to do the design work. The two biggest necessities were to add a DC power jack rather than the dual 9V battery power and add LED indicators for the Bypass and Boost switches. In addition, we added a gain knob to allow for clipping/overdrive and replaced the mid-boost/cut footswitch with a clean boost (with an HPF toggle). The mid-EQ was now always on. Lastly, the footswitches became soft relay switches rather than 3PDT. Finally, we wanted a unique enclosure design with a vintage feel. Chris Ferebee of Futura Guitars took on that task and did some amazing work.
