This one started with Sam Cavero, who runs the YouTube channel 90s_punk_rock_covers. He picked the design, and it has been evolving ever since. The original used Techflex sleeving over Gotham cable; it now uses MDPC over Sommer. Both changes were improvements — the build is more durable, and MDPC is far gentler than Techflex against a guitar finish, which matters when a cable spends its life draped over the strap button.
What hasn’t changed is the palette: platinum MDPC sleeving over nickel plugs with black housings — silver, black and steel, all cool tones running the length of it.
The Sommer in question is the SC-Spirit XXL: an 18AWG oxygen-free copper conductor with a braided shield, at 26.2 pF/ft (86 pF/m). That’s low capacitance for a conductor this heavy, and it matters more than it sounds — capacitance is what dulls the top end over a long run. Downstroke chords keep their bite at 20 feet instead of turning to mush by the time they reach the amp.
The sleeving sits outside the jacket and does not affect tone. What it buys you is a layer that takes the wear instead of the cable, and a finished build of 0.307″ (7.8mm). Terminated with G&H Bigfoot nickel connectors in black housings, hand-soldered with lead-free ROHS-compliant silver solder, built to order and tested before it ships. Backed by our lifetime warranty.
Same SC-Spirit XXL underneath either way. The Red Scare mkii goes red and makes no apology for it; the Grey Tweed mkiv goes the other direction entirely, all nickel and no shine.
