The mkii exists because of a special request from Miki Gakki, our dealer in Osaka. They asked for the Red Scare built a particular way; we built it, looked at it, and made it the standard. Red MDPC sleeving, black heatshrink, and gold contacts in black housings — a combination we wouldn’t have arrived at on our own.
The bigger change is underneath. The mkii moves to the Sommer SC-Spirit XXL — a heavier 18AWG oxygen-free copper conductor with a braided shield, running 26.2 pF/ft (86 pF/m). Capacitance is what rolls the top end off a long cable, and 26.2 pF/ft is low for a conductor this thick, so the highs stay put and the low end keeps its definition even at 20 feet.
Sleeving sits outside the jacket and has no effect on tone. What it adds is a layer that takes the wear instead of the cable, bringing the finished build to 0.307″ (7.8mm). Every one is terminated with G&H Bigfoot gold connectors in black housings, hand-soldered with lead-free ROHS-compliant silver solder, built to order and tested before it ships.
